Alisa Stack serves as the Executive Secretary to the Department, a position she has held since May 2024. In this role, Ms. Stack is responsible for the Executive Secretariat, which ensures the Department responds to correspondence and sensitive inquiries with accuracy, quality, and timeliness.
Prior to joining the VA, Ms. Stack was a career SES in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). In OSD, Ms. Stack served in leadership roles in Detainee Policy, Strategy, and Special Operations Forces policy and
resources, and Combatting Terrorism Policy. She also served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Stability Operations for two years in Afghanistan and led the transformation of the Department of Defense’s Task Force on Business and Stability Operations and the
Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) mission offices. As a student and then instructor at the National War College, Ms. Stack conducted and published primary research on how and why terrorist groups employ women, which she published in peer-reviewed and Defense journals.
